Jan Basile, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine/Geriatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina and Acting Director in Primary Care at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, both in Charleston, South Carolina.

He received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He served his internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was also Chief Resident. Dr. Basile is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is board certified in medicine and geriatrics.

A recipient of many honors and awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Golden Apple Award at the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Basile's research interests involve hypertension and vascular disease, and include outcome-based studies involving hypertension, lipid disorders, and diabetes. He is involved in several large clinical trials evaluating the effect of pharmacologic therapy on improving outcome, including the ALLHAT and ACCORD trials, both under the auspices of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In addition to his contribution to the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, Dr. Basile has published more than 100 articles, monographs, and book chapters, as well as a recent textbook, Hot Topics: Hypertension.
