William J. Elliott, MD, PhD, is Professor of Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology at Rush Medical College of Rush University at Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Elliott has extensive experience in cardiovascular clinical pharmacology, with about 200 studies of new drugs completed as principal investigator. He currently serves as co-principal investigator or co-investigator for several National Institutes of Health grants and contracts. Dr. Elliott is board certified in both internal medicine and clinical pharmacology, and is certified by the American Society of Hypertension as specialist in clinical hypertension.
Some of Dr. Elliott's most recent publications have focused on analyses of clinical trial results, cardiovascular risk factors (including diagonal earlobe creases), cost containment and pharmacoeconomics, assessment and enhancement of compliance with medication, and cost-effectiveness calculations. He contributed to five sections of the Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, and to three sections of the long version of Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. Dr. Elliott has delivered lectures on six continents, and has received many honors and awards for his work, including eight awards for teaching excellence. He has served in the review process for many journals, study sections, and funding agencies.
Dr. Elliott received his doctorate in bio-organic chemistry from the University of Chicago while completing his first year of medical studies. After receiving his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine, he was an intern and resident in medicine at Barnes Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Elliott then completed a fellowship in Pharmacology at Washington University.
